Atmosphere and Experience
To say that "Mount Everest Momo Cafe" or "Momo" for short, is a small space is an understatement. With only about 5 tables, it is a very cozy space. We thought it was almost perfect for a quiet meal, but you could also reserve the largest table and enjoy a family style experience. The entire restaurant is themed with Nepalese/Tibetan art and photos. especially displaying the Himalayas and the area's propensity for tourism and climbing.
Although we visited on an extremely busy night, the owner still made time to talk to us. Our conversation eventually carried into mountaineering, one of Henry and I's great fascinations and hobbies. We talked about our future expeditions to the Himalayas, and how excited we were to try the unique cuisine Momo offered.
Overall, the service was fast and the people were nice, so no complaints from us here.
Food
We started out with the restaurants namesake, "Momo". A traditional Nepalese/Tibetan dumpling. Ordering Yak and Chicken, the meat filling was very good. However, our critique was found in the outer, dough part. It seemed re-heated, and a bit chewy. This deducted from the dishes freshness, and overall temperature. Although the flavor was great, the texture hindered the dish.
For our entrees we ordered Lamb Chow Chow, Butter Chicken, and Lamb Curry. It is also worth mentioning we ordered all of our dishes at the spiciest level.
Starting with the chow chow, a traditional noodle dish with lamb, onion, and a medley of other diced vegatables. We thought it was very good, suprisingly good in fact. The noodles had an amazing amount of flavor, and the lamb was very well cooked, a theme for all of the dishes. Everything on this dish seemed very well seasoned, and proportional. We would consider this one of the better noodle dishes in the Treasure Valley.
Then on to the Lamb Curry, although flavorful, we didn't enjoy this one as much as we enjoyed the other two. A very spicy dish, once again filled with tender lamb, in a sauce of tomatoes, onions, and other spices. Our least favorite part of the dish was the texture, which wasn't as smooth as we anticipated. Uncharacteristic to say the least.
Our favorite dish was far and away the butter chicken. We can't think of any way to describe this dish, other than flavorful, tender, and smooth. Also considerably less spicy than the others. The rich, savory flavor is made more mild with a mix of spices, however, they don't hinder the dish in any way. It came out at a perfect temperature as well. Overall, we would give this "The Flavor Odyssey's Choice" for best Indian dish in Boise.
We also ordered Garlic Naan, a must-have addition to your meal. Crispy, and with enough, but not an overpowering amount of flavor.
After a flavorful (and very spicy) meal, we are pretty stoked on this place and would recommend it highly. In fact, we are calling it one of the best ethnic restaurants that Boise has to offer.
Value
We ordered 3 entrees, 2 appetizers, one side, and drinks. The total came out to about $40 before tip. We would consider this very good value. As we previously mentioned, Momo is a great place to enjoy a meal without breaking the bank; with a smaller group, lonesome, or even with a big group (make sure to call ahead).
